Surah Al Baqarah (Al Baqarah, The Cow) is one of the longest Surahs in the Qur’an and the second and longest chapter in the Quran. It is the second chapter of the Qur’an and has 286 verses. It consists of 6,201 words and letters. It is a Mediniite surah, that is to say that it was revealed at Medina after the Hijrah, with the exception of a few verses which Muslims believe was revealed during the last Hajj of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the Farewell Pilgrimage.
The verses with regard to riba (interest or usury) were revealed in the final days of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
The word al-Baqarah is derived from the Arabic word al-Bakarah, which means The Cow. The chapter is called Al Baqarah because it is the first surah to be revealed. It is also called Al-Baqarah because it contains the first four verses of the Qur’an, which are called Al-Baqarah verses. The word al-Baqarah means The Cow.
